Screening Mammography
Screening mammography may help detect breast abnormalities before they become clinically apparent. The appropriate age and frequency of screening depend on individual risk, national or professional recommendations and advice from the treating doctor.
Diagnostic Mammography
Diagnostic mammography is performed when there is a breast symptom or an abnormality requiring further evaluation. Additional mammographic views may be obtained depending on the finding.
Breast Ultrasound Correlation
Breast ultrasound is often complementary to mammography. It can provide additional information about a palpable lump, focal pain, mammographic density or a lesion seen on mammography. The radiologist decides when ultrasound correlation is useful.
Expertise in Breast Imaging
At Oasis Diagnostic Centre, Dr Ami Shah has developed particular expertise and interest in breast ultrasound and digital mammography. Our approach emphasizes careful correlation of clinical findings, mammographic appearances and sonographic features when appropriate.
What to Expect
During mammography, each breast is positioned and briefly compressed to obtain diagnostic-quality images. Compression may feel uncomfortable but is important for image quality and reducing unnecessary radiation exposure.
Before the Examination
Please inform the clinic if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Bringing previous mammograms, breast ultrasound reports and related investigations is very useful for comparison.
Important Note
Breast imaging findings sometimes require additional imaging, follow-up or tissue sampling. A normal mammogram also does not eliminate every possible breast abnormality, particularly in certain breast-density patterns.
